Brands cashing in on a German win

This will be my last World Cup post, I promise.

After Germany’s dramatic late winner courtesy of the left boot of Mario Goetze it was interesting to see the reaction from the twittersphere from the brands who’ve endorsed the competition and those who fancy getting in on the action.

The obvious winners were always going to be Adidas, providers of the two team’s kits, the match ball and sponsors of the tournament’s awards. Congratulations were swiftly handed out to James Rodriguez, the Golden Boot winner, and plenty of kind regards for the Germans all linking to their “#allin” campaign.

After an extensive advertising campaign it seems Beats had picked a good selection of players to endorse their products, and were quick to give plaudits to Mario Goetze.

A number of German based brands posted their congratulations, most notably Audi and Mercedes. Audi used their “quattro” slogan and a nice bit of editing with their four rings while Mercedes photoshopped the Mercedes logo over the German badge. The messaging for these two high end car manufacturers seems synonymous with the of the German team: efficient, classy, high performance – so a nice little bit of branding in there.

Interesting to see how these different brands like to associate themselves so closely with football and the commitment they put into their sponsorship, endorsement and advertising. It’s clear to see for these brands they put their eggs in the right basket and it sure has paid dividends.
